The Food Industry Association will receive funding from the Federal Government to investigate the merits of developing an industry brand to promote Western Australian produce domestically and overseas.
Minister for Agriculture Tony Burke said WA's food industry represented a significant part of the state's economic activity.
"The direct annual turnover of the Western Australian food manufacturing industry is estimated at $5.5 billion," Mr Burke said.
"The state’s geographical proximity to Asia provides a competitive advantage, making it one of the state’s most important markets."
The Food Industry Association will use up to $50,000 in funding to study options for developing and implementing an industry-funded brand for Western Australian food and beverage products.
The project is one of 14 to share in nearly $1.3 million from the Federal Government to help promote Australia’s food and forest industries to domestic and export markets.
It is the second round of funding under the three-year Promoting Australian Produce initiative – a key election commitment for rural and regional industries.
