SCADDAN farmer Nigel Norwood started harvest on November 1, 11 days later than last year.
He said yields were potentially as good, if not better this year and he expects the best of his crop to go about four tonnes per hectare.
Admittedly comparisons to last year are somewhat of a guestimate because half of his crop and virtually all of his harvesting machinery was wiped out in November 2015 in the Scaddan bushfire.
Despite the setback Nigel said he stuck to his program and rotations this year, planting 50 per cent Mace wheat, 25pc Baudin and La Trobe barley and 25pc Stingray canola which they were in the middle of direct heading when Farm Weekly visited.
The crop was yielding 1.4 tonnes per hectare, better than expected given the incredibly wet year.
"We've had a few issues with moisture and green strips in the crops," Nigel said.
"And I anticipate we've lost about one per cent to frost.
"It's not very common here, maybe only a once in 10 years happening."
