Land clearing

The relationship between farmers and DEC is strained at the moment. I also understand that there is a need to strike a balance between allowing farmers to run their business effectively whilst protecting remnant native vegetation. I do not support the removal of criminal penalties under the Environmental Protection Act, but would support a review of current land clearing legislation and will push for this if elected. I also believe that the DEC and farmers need a clearer line of communication so that all parties in this debate are better informed. There are significant opportunities for improvement in the way DEC communicates with private landowners regarding their rights and exemptions under the Environmental Protection Act.

State Barrier Fence

The existing State Barrier Fence has provided protection to most of the Agricultural areas of Western Australia for some years, but not for the more recently developed agricultural land in the south-east. I will be working to ensure this vital project gets underway as quickly as possible. State Government, in consultation with local community and industry, is undertaking the relevant processes for approval of the proposed extension, the first step of which is to determine an appropriate alignment for the extension. The Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA) has commissioned a study to assess the preferred alignment. Final determination of the proposed alignment is currently under negotiation with local industry groups. When the preferred alignment is determined it will be submitted as a proposal for assessment at both State and, if required, Federal levels.

The three key issues in my electorate:

I am passionate about improving health services across the region and attracting more medical professionals. The Nationals WA have made a strong start on improving our health services with significant investment from Royalties for Regions into our regional health system. I want to ensure this continues and delivers for all of our communities.

There are also opportunities for growth in regional tourism, to help diversify our regional economies. Significant opportunities exist in the electorate of Eyre with the beautiful beaches in the South, the incredible pastoral and agricultural areas, the iconic nullarbor and the history and beauty of the goldfields.

I will be advocating for more investment into regional tourism and for specific key projects in our region to attract more visitors.

As a small business owner myself I am concerned about many of the challenges facing our local businesses. For example, electricity costs and reliability of service in my region are a major issue. I will be arguing to ensure we keep the tariff equalisation contribution and investigate why businesses not on the SWIS pay so much more for electricity, which is a major disincentive for new businesses in the region.
