WAFarmers president Dale Park is waiting to hear news from PETA campaign frontman Jona Weinhofen as to whether he'll take up the offer to learn more about the Australian wool industry.

WAFARMERS is waiting to hear from animal rights campaigner Jona Weinhofen about when he can come to come to WA to attend a shearing school.

A crowdfunding campaign to send Mr Weinhofen, who appeared in a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) anti-wool video, to shearing school exceeded its target of $4500 on Friday morning.

A $1000 cheque which arrived in the mail from Moonijin farmer Eric Emmott took the total raised to $5500 in less than three weeks.

Burracoppin farmer Geoff Brown also put in $1000 and 95 others contributed.

An invitation was sent on Friday to Mr Weinhofen, who held a fake lamb supposedly bloodied during shearing in the PETA video.

A WAFarmers spokesperson said on Tuesday that Mr Weinhofen had acknowledged receiving the invitation in an email, but had not yet committed to coming to WA to attend shearing school.

WAFarmers president Dale Park said it was important to respond to such a blatant attack misrepresenting the wool industry and the practices of its shearers.

"PETA reported an annual turnover of $52 million last financial year, compared with our turnover of roughly $1.6m,'' Mr Park said.

"We don't have the resources or funds that large organisations such as PETA do, but that doesn't mean we'll sit back and be bullied."

He said the campaign had garnered support from across Australia and overseas and he especially thanked Mr Brown and Mr Emmott for their donations.

"WAFarmers constantly promotes the high animal welfare standards which our members maintain and strive to improve but all it takes is one misleading campaign to undo that work," Mr Park said.

A position at a shearing school will be booked for Mr Weinhofen, the vocalist and guitarist for metal band I Killed The Prom Queen, once he has confirmed that he will come and the dates that he is available.

That's a great way to make a point but what's a cost effective way to get that kind of understanding of the industry out to ALL consumers? As representative body for WA Farmers, that would be the greatest service you could render.

Why on Earth would he want to be shown how to stomp on sheep's heads, twist their necks, beat them with pliers, gouge their eyes, and even kill them, all as shown in PETA's undercover video? Why would anyone?

If you care about animal welfare, use that money instead to investigate the abuses caught on video and ensure that no sheep is ever again punched, gouged at with shearing equipment, has his/her bones broken, or is killed through reckless shearing.

Why don't you send the South Australia farmhand who did a counter-campaign to Jona's ad to shearing school? While claiming that shearing is no more harmful than a haircut, he photographed himself holding a shorn sheep who has visible cuts on her stomach.

Maybe sheep farmers are a tad bit embarrassed at the footage of the serious animal cruelty in shearing sheds and this the only way they can somehow hide the barbaric treatment of their sheep. PETA was correct in exposing all this cruelty and it's time the sheep and wool industry showed more interest in the welfare of these much abused sheep.

Learning how to abuse animals is something most people choose NOT to do.
