POLICE have found the wreckage of a light plane east of Perth, which they believe is the same aircraft that went missing yesterday afternoon with two pilots on board.

Police resumed their search for the two men, believed to be in their 40s and 60s, this morning and a short time ago a member of the public found the crash site and contacted police.

The police helicopter located the twin engine Comanche light aircraft south of the Lakes Roadhouse off Great Eastern Highway, near Sawyers Valley.

Police on the ground are now inspecting the wreckage to confirm whether or not it is the same plane that took off from Jandakot Airport en route to Northam about 8.30am yesterday and failed to return.

Police have not yet found the two pilots.

Channel 10 reporter Chiara Zaffino told 6PR the plane appeared to have "fallen apart" after crashing into trees.

Search and rescue teams were now on the ground sifting through the wreckage, she said. The RAC Rescue Helicopter is also at the scene.
