New weekend farmers' markets for Perth

Perth Market Authority has announced plans for a new weekend market to commence in 2011 at Market City, Canning Vale.

The purpose-built new market will create a greater focus on promotion and education about WA food, regional produce and community involvement.

A Sunday market currently operating at Market City will continue until July 2011.

The location will change to free up the existing undercover area to cater for the State's expanding fruit and vegetable industry.

According to PMA chief executive officer, Mike Donnelly, the new weekend market reflects a growing global trend to local community, regional and farmer markets.

"The new market will promote fresh local produce, together with a healthy lifestyle," Mr Donnelly said.

"We intend enhancing the connection and interface between producers and consumers through a friendly, relaxed and high quality weekend market.

"The PMA and its strategic partners, including the WA State Government, are committed to promoting fresh WA produce and communicating the benefits of closer links between those who grow the food and those who consume it.

"Our latest initiative will help us achieve those goals."

Mr Donnelly said the new weekend market would allow regional, niche and gourmet food producers an opportunity to showcase their products on the doorstep of Market City’s central produce market.
