A SHORT story about a netball team has earned a Bruce Rock woman an ABC Radio award.

Ingrid Fuchsbichler, 19, was one of five WA winners of the ABC Radio regional youth initiative, Heywire.

Other WA winners were Luke Devenish, Kununurra, Aimee MacCauley, Denmark, Curtis Wild, Bunbury, and Terrence Winner, Kalgoorlie.

The winners will go to Canberra in February for the Heywire Youth Issues Forum at the Australian Institute of Sport.

The forum provides experience and training in goal setting, communication, leadership, teamwork skills and problem solving and explores many of the issues raised in the winning entries.

ABC national rural editor Leigh Radford said each of the winning stories would be produced by the ABC and broadcast across ABC Local Radio and Triple J over summer and into early 2006.

Miss Fuchsbichler said she based her 400-word story on her netball team-mates because they made a great team.

"There was a mix of 17 to 43-year-olds and we all got along really well," she said.

Miss Fuchsbichler said she entered the competition at her father's insistence; she did not expect to win.

"He got the entry forms for me and I sat down for 10 minutes and wrote the story thinking that'll do," she said.
