AVON Valley resident Sharyn Frew is organising the Bulldust Country Utes Charity Muster to raise money and awareness for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Avon Youth Community and Family Services.
It will be an exciting journey for those who join the convoy leaving Beverley on July 12 heading to Darwin and then returning via the great central road.
Drivers can join for the whole 22-day trip or for sections of the run.
Sharyn was inspired to organise the trip after losing her son Daniel to depression when he was 23 years old.
In one of the last conversations Sharyn had with her son he mentioned how he would love to do a ute run and raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“Every time I sat in the ute I could not get our conversation out of my head and I decided I needed to plan the trip,” Sharyn said.
“I want the utes to make a statement and to let people know they have to talk about depression and suicide.”
Sharyn will be wearing Daniel’s hat with his favourite number 7 cattle tag on the trip as he has been a special force behind the organising of the event.
“If this ute run makes one person take a second look before they do something stupid it will be worth it,” she said.
The trip will be a great experience, camping out in the bush, meeting new people and experiencing the outback of Australia.
The group will spend three days in Darwin before returning and the group is already made up of people from all different walks of life.
Sharyn encourages the local communities to use the ute run as a chance to promote their towns.
A family fun day charity event will be held in Beverley to farewell the travellers.
Profits from the day will be donated to charity and volunteers are encouraged to get behind the cause.
“We are trying to create the feeling of a 1960s picnic show day with three-legged races, sack races, clean shears competition and contracting team shears,” Sharyn said.
“Families are encouraged to spend time together and join in with the activities .”
