Success in large cropping operations is dependent upon many factors, and when it comes to machinery, versatility and durability are vital.

Merredin farmer Doug McGinniss and his wife, Vanessa, together with Doug's parents, Mick and Christine, are planning to sow a large cropping programme to cereals this year.

With their large operation, they were keen to acquire an all-round materials handling machine earlier this season that would not only perform but excel at a variety of tasks.

After lengthy consideration, they opted for a JCB 541-70 Agri 'Super' Loadall from the manufacturer's telehandler range.

"It is the first time I have owned a telehandler, and it is excellent," Doug said.

"It has a very good bucket control system for lift and push.

"It is a no-fuss and low maintenance vehicle."

A new Vari Flow hydraulic system in JCB's Agri 'Super' units has introduced a variable-flow piston pump, while the existing load-sensing triple gear pump system remains standard on all other models.

The advantage with Vari Flow over the standard LSP+ triple gear pump system is a 27pc increase in maximum oil flow from 110 to 140L/min.

This gives faster cycle times and increased productivity, with the additional benefit that overall fuel economy is improved due to the fact the hydraulic pump only produces flow when the hydraulics are activated.
