WA lupin growers have been warned to be vigilant after a new lupin disease was detected on a property in western Victoria.

The disease, phoma schneiderae, was confirmed on white lupin (Lupinus albus), which has a broader leaf than the narrower lupin varieties, a crop of economic significance in Australia.

While phoma schneiderae is a known pathogen of broadleaf lupin species in South America it has not been excluded as a disease on the narrow leaf lupin species, lupinus angustifolius.

According to PestFax, phoma schneiderae occurs in North America, South America and Europe and there is an investigated into how it might have entered Australia.
