NATIONALS’ Member for Wagin Terry Waldron last week toured the most seasonally adverse areas in the eastern part of the Wagin electorate.
“I wanted to see firsthand the effects of this terrible season and talk with the shires, community groups, farmers and businesses,” Mr Waldron said.
“While the situation is extremely serious, I was inspired and buoyed by the positive attitudes and the locally driven initiatives to help cope with the situation,” he said.
Mr Waldron said he was keeping the state government aware of the serious situation and was confident there would be state government initiatives to assist affected communities.
“Local shires and communities are already undertaking initiatives to support each other and I am really keen to assist them and my meetings with them helped identify possible options,” Mr Waldron said.
“Shortage of water is looming as a major issue for farmers, businesses and for the shires for their ovals,” he said.
Mr Waldron also said in his role as Sports Minister he had his department examining possible sporting events and programs that could be initiated to support communities.
“Bringing sports events and programs to local communities experiencing these tough conditions can help build morale and provide a great day or night out plus giving fund raising opportunities,” Mr Waldron said.
“It is important that this is done in close consultation with the local government and the local communities,” he said.
Mr Waldron said he would continue to liaise with local councils and communities and congratulated them on their self-help initiatives.
