Water use efficiency for WA farmers

30 Jan, 2009 04:55 PM

Planning for a research, development and extension project to identify factors significantly increasing water use efficiency in mixed crop and livestock systems is underway for 2009.

The GRDC and Meat and Livestock Australia plan to invest $9.5 million nationally during the next five years to improve whole farm profitability and sustainability, while concurrently increasing whole farm ground cover.

The Grower Group Alliance (GGA), a GRDC-supported project connecting grower groups, agribusiness and research organisations in WA, will coordinate the project's planning in WA.

Susan Hall, GGA Project Officer, said results from two workshops and feedback from stakeholders statewide would be incorporated into a project proposal by February.

"The project will be part of phase two of the Grain and Graze national program, which covers WA's wheatbelt and targets new approaches to delivering information, products and skills to farmers to implement improved management practices."

Feedback and ideas can be submitted on the GGA website, www.gga.org.au
