WIDESPREAD storms hit all states except SA and Tasmania yesterday.
These are attributed to a low pressure trough over northwestern WA and another trough stretching from the NT, right down to the southeast.
Early this morning saw thunderstorms leave northern Victoria and head across the border into southern NSW and the ACT. In northern Victoria, 24 hour rainfall totals to 9am yesterday were up to about 20mm and in some cases even up to 30mm.
At Echuca, Vic, 31mm was collected to 9am, making it the wettest day in nearly 2 years and the wettest October day in 5 years. Redesdale saw 27.8mm which is their wettest October day in 10 years.
By mid-morning the storms in the southeast of the country had died away, just as isolated storms in central parts of WA and the Top End of the NT had fired up.
These storms continued right through the afternoon, while back over in the east, storms started to build in northern NSW and southern QLD.
By mid-afternoon, instability over the Blue Mountains caused storms to appear and, steered by northwesterly winds in the upper atmosphere, rolled across parts of Sydney.
