THE results of the annual Elders Springing Heifer sale held at Boyanup often reflect the state of the WA cattle industry.
And judging by prices at this year’s sale, things may be looking up for cow-calf producers.
The sale held yesterday, saw 976 Friesian cross heifers offered and sold, to a top of $1475 and an average of $1294. The sale grossed $1.26 million.
Last year’s sale, when the beef market was in the doldrums, saw 895 heifers sold for a $964 average. There were nearly 600 head passed in at last year’s sale also.
The top price line consisted of three Simmental-Friesian heifers that were mated to an Angus bull. They were offered by JA & NA Brookes, Witchcliffe and bought by Bill Kessell, Dardanup.
The second top price line consisted of eight Charolais-Friesian heifers that were mated to a Limousin bull. These sold for $1425 and were offered by KS & EN Roberts, Elgin and bought by Bruce Marsh, Karridale.
All lines offered at the sale sold for more than $1025.
