WESTERN Meat Packers has reportedly begun buying and processing cattle again.
It's been more than two months since a devastating fire destroyed the Western Meat Packers processing plant at O'Connor, with damage estimates of more than $10 million.
News of the fire had an immediate impact on saleyard prices, with a valuable industry player removed from the industry another blow to beef producers.
However, last week the processor was once again active in the saleyards, reportedly buying cattle and killing 100 head per day.
In November the company announced that its operations would continue in the short term in a reduced capacity, after negotiating a short-term shared agreement of a meat processing facility in Fremantle which will enable the processing of about 50 cattle per day.
Western Meat Packers general manager Rod Russell was unavailable for comment, but it is understood that the company is still currently processing at the same Fremantle facility.
Red Meat Action Group (RMAG) member Mike Introvigne said he was very pleased to see that Western Meat Packers had resumed operations and hoped they would return to their full capacity of up to 400 cattle.
After a rough few years for the beef industry, Mr Introvigne said he believed things were on their way up.
"With the number of cows that have gone out of the system here, there will be less calves around next year which could mean we're in for good times price-wise," he said.
