WELL-GROWN, well-muscled, weaned calves will be the order of the day when Elders hosts its next weaner sale at Boyanup.
In the sale on Wednesday, December 14 at 1pm the Elders team is expected to yard 1200 quality calves, which have all been weaned for a minimum of 14 days.
Filling up the majority of the pens will be 720 mixed sex Angus and Angus cross calves, 250 Charolais cross calves and 180 Murray Greys youngsters.
Elders South West sales co-ordinator Michael Carroll said they were expecting the number of weaners on offer to increase compared to their last sale with an expected yarding of 1200 head.
"We will have some really good large lines of mainly Angus and Murray Grey and their crosses on offer in the sale and in the Euro section there will be some really good Charolais cross weaners," he said.
"Being Elders weaned for a minimum, of 14 days means that all the calves coming in are highly suitable for graziers, feeders, backgrounders and exporters with a range of weights from the mid-200 kilogram up to 400kg.
"The current weaner market is looking very good and this sale is a great opportunity to secure prepared weaners (weaned) before the Christmas break."
Among the feature drafts in the sale will be a large consignment of Angus steers from the WA College of Agriculture - Harvey.
The college will offer 110 black steers, its entire male drop from its Angus breeding herd.
The March/April-drop calves are based on Diamond Tree and the college's own Mornington Angus stud bloodlines.
The line is expected to weigh 280-320kg and was paddock-weaned in mid-November.
In terms of health treatments the college's calves have received their 7in1 booster and a Pilligard Pinkeye treatment at weaning and they were drenched in August.
Another substantial draft of Angus steer calves will be trucked in from Rosa Glen-based Jasper Hills Resources.
The operation will offer 60 lightweight Angus steers which will be ideal for grazier requirements.
The classy, black steers were dropped in March/April and are based on Diamond Tree (AI) and Blackrock Angus bloodlines.
At weaning on October 19 the calves received a Vitamin A,D E and B12 injection and then on November 14 they were drenched with Dectomax and received at Multimin treatment.
Rosa Brook producers GK & KL Cain, will also offer an impressive line of 30 Angus steers.
The February/March drop calves are mainly sired by Monterey Angus bulls but there is also a small percentage out of an AI program in which Lawsons and Weigh Up Angus sires were used.
Elders Margaret River agent Alec Williams said they were a very good line of well-bred steers suitable for feedlots or graziers.
The calves were weaned on November 27 and have had a 7in1, Multimin and B12 treatments and a backline drench.
Also offering a large line of pure Angus calves will be TP Aldridge, Donnybrook, who has nominated 70 mixed sex weaners for the sale.
Coming in from the Donnybrook paddocks of IN & BJ Trigwell will be 70 Angus cross mixed sex weaners.
The calves are March/April/May drop and come sale day will range between 260-340kg for an average of 290kg.
They are sired by bulls carrying Blackrock Angus bloodlines and out of mixed breed cows.
After a successful sale last month Gavin Russell, Callanish Grazing, Thompsons Brook, will be back again with another large draft of calves.
For this sale he has nominated 70 Charolais cross mixed sex weaners and 30 Angus mixed sex weaners, which have all been weaned for 14 days.
The Charolais cross calves, which are expected to average 320kg, are sired by Mr Russell's hombred Callanish stud Charolais bulls and out of Angus cows based on his own bloodlines.
The Angus calves, which are also based on Mr Russell's Angus bloodlines, will weigh 350-390kg.
Elders Boyanup agent Mal Barrett said the Callanish calves have been proven performers for previous buyers and with the shape and muscling of this year's drop buyers could again expect them to perform either in the feedlot or on grass.
The calves have been vaccinated twice with 5in1.
Dardanup producers Brad and Michael Telini, G & RN Telini, will offer 50 heifer weaners from herd their herd of 450 Angus and Murray Grey breeders, which will be suitable for grass fatteners or lotfeeders.
These calves are sired by Angus-Limousin bulls and out of Angus and Murray Grey cows.
The bloodlines used in family's herd include Monterey and Little Meadows Angus, Monterey Murray Grey and Unison Limousin.
The February drop calves were weaned on November 14 and will between 240-320kg.
In terms of health treatments they have had a single dose of 5in1 and a Cydectin drench at weaning.
Other larger drafts in the sale will come from MG & RC Schubert, Elgin and Notechis, Roelands.
The Schuberts offering will consist of 54 Murray Grey and Charolais cross mixed sex calves which were dropped in February, while Notechis will offer 46 classy Murray Grey mixed sex calves.
Rounding out the bigger offerings will be GC & CA Bleechmore, Boyup Brook, with 40 Angus and Charolais cross mixed sex calves; Tanbree Farm, will offer 35 Angus cross mixed sex weaners, while 32 Angus cross mixed sex weaners will be trucked in by Letchford Grazing, Bridgetown.
