WA red meat producers are being encouraged to join Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) as part of national membership campaign that has now passed the 10,000 mark. MLA chairman David Crombie announced the 10,000th member was Queensland cattleman David Fryer, Prairie. Mr Crombie said it was a significant milestone for the producer-owned company and urged more West Australian producers to register. "While it is pleasing that more than 10,300 beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat producers have chosen to register with the company, we would hope many more will join," he said. "MLA undertakes a range of marketing and research and development activities on behalf of the industry and we want to keep producers informed on where their levy money is being spent and the benefits to them. The best way to stay informed is to register." To date, only 816 WA red meat producers have registered with MLA, compared with NSW (3576), Victoria (2154), Queensland (2049), South Australia (868), Tasmania (703), ACT (165) and the Northern Territory (57). The company expects to reach its short-term membership target of 12,000 by the time of the MLA annual general meeting in November. The 10,000th member, Mr Fryer, said: "I think it's a positive thing to be a member of your own producer organisation." MLA carries out research and development, marketing and promotion activities on behalf of the beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat industries using funds raised from industry transaction levies. There is no extra cost to red meat producers to join MLA and interested producers can register by phoning membership services co-ordinator Christian Mulders on tollfree 1800 675 717, fax (02) 9463 9208 or email cmulders@mla.com.au
