SAABCO set for dispersal sale

30 Aug, 2000 03:06 PM

A WEALTH of sheep genetics will be offered by the South African and Australian Breeding Company (SAABCO) during October. SAABCO will hold two dispersal sales on two days at the Katanning ram selling complex, with South African Meat Merinos to be offered on Monday, October 9. Then on Friday, October 13, Dorpers and Damaras will be offered. The SAMM offering will comprise 110 stud ewes, 110 stud rams, 70 commercial ewes and 30 commercial rams. Included will be an offering of SAMMS from Wyvern Park, Gidgegannup, in that stud's reduction sale. The Dorper line-up on the Friday will be made up of 40 stud ewes, 60 stud rams, 20 commercial ewes and 30 commercial rams, while the Damaras to be offered include 200 stud ewes, 30 one-year-old rams, 40 ram lambs, plus 50 mixed sex ET lambs on recipient ewes. Both sales will start at 1pm. SAABCO project manager David Thorn said the company was formed in 1994 solely to introduce top South African sheep genetics into Australia and this had been accomplished, so it decided on a dispersal of the remaining genetics. "The genetics of these three breeds have gone Australia-wide into every state and territory of Australia. There are even Dorpers in Tasmania and lambs are due on the ground in New Zealand any day now," he said. "The sale will give many breeders the chance to access top genetics from all three breeds." It was an ideal opportunity for breeders who wanted to start their own studs, especially with the release of all the ewes, he said. All sheep were pure South African-based from 21 of that country's top studs. "It is a genuine dispersal sale with four-year-old sheep down to lambs to be offered," said David, who has been running the flocks at Kojonup. "It is the first real auction of both stud and commercial sheep and will be a realistic sale, with all animals scanned and measured to Lambplan specifications." The rams and ewes will be penned by 10am each sale day and inspection is invited from then until both sales start at 1pm. Katanning is 300km south-east of Perth and an airstrip is available. pMore information: Elders Kojonup, 9831 1088, Kim McDougall 0417 832 120, Tony Wetherall 0409 395 193 or David Thorn, Wescorp, 9336 1855 or 0429 687 440.
