THE only thing not red hot at the Elders Boyanup sale was the weather, which continued on its merry freezing way.
While this season reports of record sales have become repetitious, this sale could be described as nothing less than a "rip snorter".
Any sale offering 1335 cattle, grossing more than $1.3 million and averaging more than $1000 a head is hard to knock.
The yarding was of mixed quality but fortunately the majority were good types.
Some outstanding results were recorded, especially the mediumweight appraisal Friesian steers which sold to $1010, with these smaller framed than what usually start this section.
Also, very few pens sold for under $900.
Beef steers reached $1490 liveweight and 400c/kg for light cattle, while appraisal topped at $950.
Beef heifers reached $1428 for one heavy heifer with quality mediumweights selling to 332c/kg and consistently over 300c/kg.
Beef cross steers saw a heavy animal make to $1638, with others selling to 316c/kg.
Some excellent Friesian steers were offered, selling to $1422 and 272c/kg, to be equal with recent highest rates.
Friesian poddies were popular, selling to $645.
Small in numbers, and stature, beef first cross heifers topped at $960, with quality mated beef heifers selling well to $2120.
Several pens of cows and calves were presented to see a top of $1850 achieved.
The sale started with a pen of six Red Angus steers weighing 497kg from Thomas Cross Family that sold for the equal top of $1490 at 300c/kg.
Soon after RH & ME Casey sold 10 traditional black steers for $1490 also when the 458kg steers made 325c/kg with both pens going to Harvey Beef Farms (HBF).
HBF soon added seven steers from V Piscioneri at $1368 and 314c/kg.
Harris Beef Enterprises bid to $1364 and 320c/kg for Thomas Cross steers as well as six from IN Trigwell for $1388 and 318c/kg.
A pen of 11 Limousin from Morrisvale appealed to Richard Pollock, Landmark Waroona, who bid to 330c/kg and $1357 before adding two more for $1285 and 336c/kg.
Other top results were two Charolais weighing 457kg from ED Hoddle, Collie, selling for $1418 and 310c/kg to HBF.
The best of the steers from MK Barnes, Waterloo, were bought by JL Piscioneri for $1285 when the 378kg steers sold for 340c/kg.
Other multiple pen buyers included RA Rogers feedlot, Galati Family Trust and Michael Longford, Elders Waroona.
Elders Boyanup agent Mal Barrett, again accumulated numbers.
He paid the top of 400c/kg, paid for two Angus from WA College of Agriculture, Harvey, with the 250kg steers costing $1000.
The top price among the beef heifers went to a single Hereford cross from Norsca Holdings, Donnybrook, when the 595kg heifer sold to Western Meat Packers (WMP) for $1428.
Trevor Scott sold heifers to $1309 when O & Co bid to 270c/kg for the 485kg animal.
Morrisvale sold a Limousin weighing 455kg for 288c/kg, going to O & Co.
A line of 13 Angus heifers from Depiazzi Ag topped at 332c/kg when the 260kg heifers were bought by SD Burton for $864.
A pen of seven Angus cross were the best of the beef cross steers when WMP outlaid $1638 for the 589kg steers.
Another three went to HBF at $1405.
Friesian steers saw a top of $1422 paid by Johnson Meats for seven offered on account of Dudinallup Pastoral, Nannup, with the 564kg steers selling at 252c/kg.
The top of 272c/kg went to 14 weighing 363kg and returning $987 for DJ Galati.
Prices were consistent from 260 to 266c/kg, with P & G Oates, MR Piggott and Range Lee Grazing selling steers in this range.
Appraisal beef steers saw Vern Pitter, Waroona, ecstatic when his first pen of five made the top of $950.
Next best in a small offering went to six Stenelees Pastoral steers sold to VA Edwards for $840.
Stenelees shortly after sold the top appraisal dairy steers for $1010, going to Yackaboon Grazing.
Gralyn Estate paid $955 for HD Harrison steers, $960 for lines from C Baggetta and JM Italiano, while Greycliffe Farm, Burekup, outlaid $855 for 16.
Geoff Veary, Karridale, spent the top poddie money of $645, for 17 West and Haggerty calves, which are always sought after.
A single Angus first cross heifer from HJ Cater & Co, Marybrook, topped at $960 when it was bought by Norsca Holdings.
Other heifers were only poddie size and sold to $910.
The lines of prime quality mated Shorthorn heifers were an attraction to the sale for many, with the eight best soft breeders bought by Richard Pollock and went to SL Prosser for $2120, with this buyer then taking the next pen of six for $2060.
Vendors, GC & CA Bleechmore, Boyup Brook, sold eight pens with the cheapest line selling for $1680.
Late calving cows with young calves at foot and not remated realised a top of $1850, paid by Sylvania Farms for four Murray Grey units sold account Uduc Brook Farms, Harvey.
