SHEARING delays cut numbers but not quality at Elders' annual breeders sheep sale at Ongerup last week. The yarding of 5246 locally bred sheep included 2000 1.5yo ewes, mainly August-September shorn and 2100 1yo and wether lambs carrying good skins. Apart from Fletcher International buying one pen of young wethers, all lots were snapped up by woolgrowers. The sale's top price of $19.20 was reached twice. TB and IM Stewart, Highlands, Ongerup, who has benchmarked the quality of this yarding over many years, offered 435 wether lambs which went to ET and CM Jefferis, Wagin at $19.20. Equalling the price were 152 September shorn 1.5yo Merna blood wethers from A and S Wisewould, Fitzgerald, which went to Fletcher International, Narrikup. Other wether sales included: BR and PM Trevaskis, Jerramungup, 117 February shorn 1.5yo Strathglen blood wethers at $17.60, bought by Wesfarmers Dalgety, Lake Grace; and $17.60 again when W and D Flint, Jerramungup, sold 381 Boonoke blood 1yo September shorn wethers to TL and EG Norton, Yorkrakine. MJ Wellstead, Borden, sold 381 August shorn 2.5yo Sunny Valley blood for $15.60 to Dunara Farms, Broomehill. JW and LJ Dicandello, Gairdner, sold 442 Peppin wethers September shorn for $14.20 to Norton, while MJ Wellstead saw 230 August shorn Sunny Valley 14mo wethers go for $10 to Elders, Albany. The biggest line of the sale, 630 Willemenup blood wether lambs from DB and PR Jolly, Borden, made $15.20 when sold to G Prater, Lake Grace. These were lambs with a lot of potential growth. It was not surprising that the 361 Highland blood 5.5yo August shorn ewes which opened the sale made $15.40 for TB and IM Stewart and Son, Ongerup. They were the top ewes and were bought by J Kerst, Muntadgin. Another attractive line of 335 Stewart and Son, Highland 1.5yo August shorn ewes made $11 when bought by FW McKee, Fitzgerald. BW and DA Barrows, Borden, sold 170 July shorn 1.5yo Mianellup blood ewes for $15.20 to Elders, Albany. G and A Spence, Borden, sold 131 Strathaddon blood 14mo March shorn ewes for $14.20 to Gleneda Grazing Company, Mt Barker, and RL and CM Wiese, Jerramungup, sold 368 September shorn 1.5yo Jaloran blood ewes for $14 to Dunara Farms, Broomehill. RE and KJ Woods, Jacup, offered 214 April shorn 1.5yo Lyndhurst blood ewes and these went for $13.80 to Windi Windi Pastoral Company, Mettler. Other good ewe sales included MA and TL Curtin, Needilup, whose 199 April shorn 1.5yo Possum Hill blood ewes made $13.40; RGN Smith, Amelup, whose 317 September shorn 1.5yo Barloo-Mianelup blood ewes were knocked down for $13.20; and A and S Wisewould, Fitzgerald, who put forward 149 September shorn 1.5yo Merna blood ewes, these going for $10.20. Selling agents were Elders Gnowangerup and Jerramungup.
