Price taker to price maker

"Keeping farmers on the farm is my passion," says newly appointed GRDC Western Region Panel member, David Fienberg, Senior Operations Manager of Supply Chain Quality at CBH and Managing Director of Australasian Lupin Processing.

"Growers face many challenges, including cost/price squeeze, lack of a sufficient number of high quality staff, cost-effective chemicals and fertilisers, achieving the right balance with technology and the lack of youth keen to stay in grain farming and eventually step up to leadership roles."

Mr Fienberg says the changing agricultural environment is not as clearly understood as it was 10 years ago and there must be clear mechanisms for communicating with the industry and solving problems.

"Problems need swift resolution, so we're not hampered by indecision or poor decisions."

And changing the focus in grain marketing from growers being price takers to price makers is imperative, enabling value to be delivered back to the farm instead of the grain trader, Mr Fienberg indicated.
