SEEDING is well underway at the King and Crabtree property at Gairdner River.
The operation will plant a 3000 hectare program consisting of 1400ha of wheat, 1200ha of canola, 300ha of barley, 75ha of lupins and 40ha of oats.
Jarrod King is also trialling faba beans and has planted 75ha to see if they offer another rotation option.
“I drove past the Gnowangerup Community Crop’s faba bean crop a few times last year and was impressed with how it looked, so I thought I would give them a go,” he said.
“If we get a normal year here, it can get wet and the beans are supposed to handle the wet better than lupins and if they go alright they will provide us with another rotation crop and will be good sheep feed.”
Wheat varieties going in this year include Mace, Sceptre and Eagle Rock, while Bonito will make up the majority of the canola program with a small amount of Clearfield.
The program is 30 per cent complete and going into good moisture.
Good summer rains meant the farm has received 225mm of rainfall for the year.
A further 6.5mm received last week has helped kick things along with the lupins and faba beans already germinated.
The canola program was expected to be finished last Friday and then the wheat and barley would be going in.
