DEPARTMENT of Agriculture and Food director general Rob Delane has announced changes to the department’s executive team.

Peter Metcalfe has been appointed to the role of executive director of Regional Operations and Development, coordinating the department’s regional presence across the State.

Mr Metcalfe has moved across from his previous role as executive director Grains Industry, which will now be led by Mark Sweetingham for the next six months.

Mr Delane said the changes strengthened the department’s focus on the economic development of the State’s agricultural industries.

“The success of our agriculture and food sector is integral to the State’s economic wellbeing, making it vital that we have strategic and innovative leaders with the passion to take the sector forward,” Mr Delane said.

Mr Metcalfe has led the department’s grains activity for the past two years and played a key role working with industry to determine the impact of wheat market deregulation.

“Under Peter’s leadership, the department supported the development of the Grains Industry Association of Western Australia, opened the New Genes for New Environments facilities at Merredin and Katanning, and led the establishment of the recently launched Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre,” Mr Delane said.

New grains executive director, Mark Sweetingham, has undertaken a wide range of research and leadership roles within the grains and crop protection areas.

“As Grains Industry Development director, Mark led the development of the National Grains Industry Research, Development and Extension Strategy in partnership with the Grains Research and Development Corporation,” Mr Delane said.

“He also played a leading role in establishing AEGIC, taking on the role of interim managing director.

“Mark and Peter have a wealth of experience and a track record of success in the Australian grains industry, which will be invaluable as they lead our Grains and Regional Operations and Development teams to support the success of businesses and land managers across the agricultural sector.”

Greg Paust has been appointed executive director of Corporate Strategy and Operations.
