Despite a 42°C day that would have enabled them to fry a steak or two on the bonnet on the way home, a handful of WA Supreme Angus premium beef pack winners travelled from as far afield as Mullewa and Cowaramup to collect their prizes from The Beef Shop, Maddington, on Tuesday.
The $300 beef prize packs were part of Farm Weekly's latest subscriber giveaway competition in which the main prize was 10 purebred unmated 2012-drop Angus heifers valued at $10,000, courtesy of the WA Angus Society and Farm Weekly.
While all admitted to a bit of disappointment at being pipped by Emma Bowen, Boyanup, who won the heifers, this year's inaugural beef pack winners were unanimous in their excitement and appreciation at the chance to get some premium Angus product on their fork.
The packs, courtesy of The Beef Shop principals Kevin and Wendy Armstrong, the WA Angus Society and Farm Weekly, contained a range of premium Angus product from scotch fillet to beef sausages.
In keeping with the Angus theme the Marriott family, Corrigin, O'Brien family, Mullewa, Muir family, Lake Muir and John and Anne Marshall, Cowaramup, who made the beefy pilgrimage to The Beef Shop, all run Angus cattle on their respective properties.
The Beef Shop manager and butcher Kurt van Oossanen said the competition had provided a great opportunity to increase brand awareness of the WA Angus Supreme product and of the quality of Angus cattle and Angus beef in WA in general.
"Through their long association with the beef cattle industry Kevin and Wendy know well the quality of Angus cattle in WA and it's a breed and a branded beef product we're proud to promote and be associated with," Kurt said.
In all, 10 beef packs were won by 10 lucky Farm Weekly subscribers.
