MORE than 40 representatives from across government, industry and rural communities gathered in Perth last Friday to discuss the dry season across parts of the Wheatbelt.
The forum, hosted by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, provided an opportunity to better understand the affect of the season on rural businesses and communities.
Below average rainfall is affecting the northern and eastern grainbelt, as well as parts of the lower Great Southern.
Agriculture and Food division deputy director general Mark Sweetingham said it was important for the department to hear first-hand what activities and services were needed.
“The 2017 season is proving to be extremely challenging for many agribusinesses, as harvest draws nearer and the full impact of the seasonal conditions on grain crops and livestock feed becomes more apparent,” Dr Sweetingham said.
“This meeting will enable us to better identify the issues going forward so we can work together to support those involved in agribusiness, their families and rural communities.”
The department has been active since the beginning of the season, when climate models indicated below average rainfall for many parts of the grainbelt, providing information and advice to agribusinesses, consultants and industry.
Dr Sweetingham said its 2017 Growing Season Resources webpage is continually updated with technical and practical information, as well as links to financial and well-being support.
Department officers in the affected regions have been consulting with industry and will continue to provide advice and information at upcoming events and field days.
Industry has also been proactive, holding grower workshops, community events and establishing feed registers.
“Western Australian farm businesses are experienced at managing climatic challenges and making informed decisions to navigate and manage through the season,” Dr Sweetingham said.
“There are government support programs available to assist, including the Farm Household Allowance, the Rural Financial Counselling Service and the WA Farm Debt Mediation service.
“These services and other support services are on the department’s 2017 Growing Season Resources webpage.”
