A TOUGH start to the 2017 cropping season has highlighted the need for ongoing research into variable seasonal conditions according to the Council of Grain Grower Organisations (COGGO).
Group chairman Chris Wilkins made the statement as his group opened up applications for new research funding.
“We look forward to receiving some fresh innovative ideas for start-up R&D projects from groups and individuals in the WA grains research community”, he said.
Project funding is from $20,000 to $50,000 a year for one and two-year projects and will be given to projects that provide clear benefits for Western Australian grain growers.
“Increasingly farmers are having to adapt to their farming techniques, not only to variable seasonal conditions, but as market signals dictate changes in the mix of the grain crops they grow and new problems emerge in terms of managing pests, weeds and diseases,” he said.
“Technology solutions are also at the top of the list for ways to improve grain farm profitability.”
Nearly $300,000 in funding was allocated by COGGO for four projects underway this year.
