VANDALS caused thousands of dollars damage to several cars at a car yard in Northam last week.
The damage was caused last Tuesday night by what appears to be a gang of juveniles who used railway line ballast to damage 17 vehicles at Valley Ford/Northam Hyundai, which is next to the line.
It is believed the offences occurred between 7pm and midnight.
Staff discovered the damaged vehicles when they arrived at work at 7.30am on Wednesday.
They found the ground strewn with rocks and vehicles with windows broken and body panels damaged.
Up to 300 rocks were used in the rampage.
Dealer principal Wade Robertson believes three of the 17 vehicles damaged may have to be written off.
“Damage could be worth up to $25,000. This is the fourth time this year we have been hit,” he said. “It is very depressing.”
On the same night, and probably the same offenders, used line ballast to damage windows at the northern end of the railway station.
Northam police are checking CCTV footage from the area and detectives are assisting the investigation.
Over the past few weeks vandalism has been on the increase.
Windows and doors at the new Recreation Centre have been smashed while the sound shell in Bernard Park has been damaged.
Shire of Northam chief executive officer Neville Hale said the shire was waiting for funding to buy CCTV cameras.
“The first will go into Bernard Park and we have chosen other locations which we will not reveal,” he said.
Meanwhile, police have asked that anyone who might have information about the vandalism to contact them on 9622 4260.
