Monsanto has entered into a collaboration agreement in the United States with Dole Fresh Vegetables to develop new products that will enhance consumer vegetable choices.

The five-year collaboration will focus on broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and spinach. Plant breeding will be used to improve the nutrition, flavour, colour, texture, taste and aroma of these vegetables.

Any new products realised from this collaboration could be commercialised by Dole in North America.

"The consumer wins because Dole's market knowledge combined with our research and development capabilities will help bring new healthy and flavourful products to consumers," said David Stark, vice president of consumer traits at Monsanto.

"We are very excited and pleased to bring this focus to our business via this collaboration with Dole and its strong brand."

This type of collaboration combines the strengths of the two industry leaders, each bringing their unique capabilities to the partnership.

Monsanto's agricultural expertise that improves the speed and accuracy of new and beneficial characteristics will be guided by Dole's knowledge of consumer needs and marketing.

What utter rubbish! What is wrong with the colour, flavour, texture etc etc of these vegies if they are simply fresh? Just more from Monsanto of something we don't need, but will make them more money.

Hmmm - no mention of genetic manipulation or GMOs and of course Monsanto are only doing it for the benefit of consumers!

Susan...you took the words out of my mouth! Why don't they collaborate with consumers...we'll be able to tell them that we want our veggies fresh and safe without inbred chemicals. While the GM industry hides behind the pathetic labelling laws designed to protect them the consumer will continue to be voiceless in this debate. Bring in transparent labelling and let's see how successful these products are.
