PRESIDENT of the Australian Cashew Association John Waring has been awarded the prestigious Golden Nut Award in front of hundreds of international nut industry colleagues.
Mr Waring was presented with the award at the gala dinner as part of the 33rd World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress, held in Melbourne in May.
Mr Waring is the chairman and founder of the Waring Group and the chairman of MWT Foods Australia and associated companies. He is also a member of the International Nut Congress (INC).
Australian pistachio grower and long time nut industry advocate Chris Joyce was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr Joyce has been involved in the Australian nut industry since the 1970s as an import distributor, grower of pistachios, and packer of almonds and pistachios.
He is currently a member of the board of Nut Producers Australia, Australian Nut Industry Council, chairman of Nuts for Life and the Pistachio Grower's Association Research Committee.
Dr Emilio Ros, senior consultant and director of the Lipid Clinic, Endocrinology and Nutrition Service, Hospital Clínic, University of Barcelona, Spain was awarded the Excellence in Research Award.
Dr Ros has devoted his career to the study of nutrition in relation to cardiovascular risk, with particular interest in nuts and their health effects.
He has led many clinical projects on the effects of nuts on blood lipids, endothelial function, blood pressure, postprandial events, inflammation and cognitive health.
Australian celebrity chef Neil Perry received the Award for Excellence in Gastronomy.
Mr Perry has managed several quality restaurants in Australia and today concentrates on his flagship brand, the Rockpool Group, which includes Rockpool, Rockpool Bar & Grill Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, Spice Temple Sydney and Melbourne, and Rosetta Ristorante.
The awards ceremony capped off a successful congress.
