YOUNG cattle with plenty of room to grow and fatten will be the major attraction at this month's Elders Boyanup store cattle sale.
In the sale on Friday, July 15, the Elders South West team is expecting to yard 1000 head with the majority of these aged between four and 12 months.
On offer will be 500 dairy steers, 200 beef steers, 180 beef heifers, 80 first-cross steers as well as a small run of cow and calf units.
Elders South West sale co-ordinator Michael Carroll said there would be a good yarding of stores on offer in the sale this month.
"This month we have a lot of younger type cattle, aged 4-12 months in the offering," he said.
A feature in the beef cattle lines will be a draft of Murray Grey-Angus cross calves from the paddocks of Scott River producers Alec and Colleen McNab, Alec C & CJ McNab.
In the breakdown the McNabs will offer 41 steers and 40 heifers which are aged 12 to 16 months.
The classy calves are out of predominantly Angus cows and sired by Monterey Murray Grey bulls.
Elders Boyanup agent Mal Barrett said the McNabs' calves were in store condition and would weigh between 200 to 340kg.
"Normally they run them through and sell them in October/November but due to seasonal conditions and a shortage of feed they have decided to offer them now," Mr Barrett said.
"They are ideal calves for either graziers or lotfeeders."
Waroona operation Balcormo Pastoral Co will also offer numbers in the beef lanes when it trucks in 50 Blonde d'Aquitaine cross calves (30 steers and 20 heifers).
The blonde beauties are 10-12mo and will weigh between 260-320kg.
The calves are sired by Blonde d'Aquitaine bulls and out of predominantly Limousin and Gelbvieh cross cows.
Elders Waroona agent Michael Longford said the calves would present extremely well.
"They are in store to forward store condition and would ideally suit backgrounders and lotfeeders," he said.
"Some of the heifers have potential to be future breeders."
If it is future breeders you are looking for, then you will not want to walk pass the black beauties on offer from the WA College of Agriculture, Harvey.
In the sale the college will offer 22 Angus heifers and 11 Angus cross calves all aged 10 to 12 months.
The pure Angus line are sired by Diamond Tree Angus bulls while the Angus cross line are sired by Belgian Blue-Angus bulls and out of Angus cows.
Elders Brunswick Harvey representative Alex Roberts said they were an impressive line of heifers which were very quiet and surplus to the operation's requirements.
"They will make ideal future breeders," he said.
The heifers will weigh around 300kg and have been treated with 7in1 and B12 and have been drenched.
The college will also offer five Angus cow and calf units.
Busselton and Scott River-based operation Cattle Chosen will round out the bigger vendors in the beef section when it trucks in 34 Charolais-Murray Grey cross calves (17 steers and 17 heifers) aged 10-12 months.
In the first-cross steer offering the biggest draft will come from MAM & PR Martin, Karridale.
The Martins, who are well-known for their first-cross heifer drafts, will truck in 15 Angus-Friesian steers aged 12-14 months.
The owner-bred steers are sired by Diamond Tree Angus bulls.
Matching the quality offering of beef cattle will be an impressive line-up of dairy steers ranging in age from four to 20 months.
One of the larger vendors in the black and white lanes will be Clive Elson, CW & YR Elson, Karridale, who will offer 40 Friesian steers.
The majority of the 12mo steers are owner-bred, while the balance were purchased in as calves.
Elders Margaret River agent Alec Williams said the steers were well-grown and ready to grow out as slaughter cattle.
In terms of health treatments the line was drenched in late May and has had access to minerals through water supplements and lick blocks.
Another line sure to impress from the Karridale region will be 40 Friesian steers on offer from the Woodhouse family, Peninsular Downs.
Mr Williams said normally the operation would have sold the calves at a younger age but due to a good season and plenty of feed they decided to hold on to them and grow them out.
The calves are 12-14mo and are all owner-bred.
Other sizable lines of Friesian steers in this same age bracket include 25 steers (12-14mo) from IL & DJ Roberts; 28 steers (10-12mo) from Dunmore Farming, Scott River and 27 steers (10-12mo) from Kerridge Farm, Cowaramup.
Busselton operation Kingsley McSwain will have biggest load of Friesian steers to truck in for the sale.
The Busselton operation has nominated 60 steers, aged 8-10 months.
Coming in from the Harvey area from PG & MC Italiano will be 40 Friesian steers aged 8-10 months.
The steers are all owner-bred and bucket reared.
In poddie line-up the biggest drafts will come from Capel operation West & Haggerty, which will offer 36 Friesian steers (4-6mo) and Negus Enterprises, Tutanup, which will truck in 30 Friesian steers (4-6mo).
