WA beef genetics have proved their worth on the east coast recently with Bonnydale Black Simmental client Mike Ward, "Bona Vista" via Rockhampton achieving outstanding results with his steers in a couple of competitions.
Twice this year he achieved top results for his steers, in late June a steer from his operation was awarded the champion led steer at the 2016 Rockhampton Junior Beef Show and then in late July he achieved equally outstanding results at the 2016 Central Queensland Carcase Classic.
The champion led steer was exhibited at the Rockhampton Junior Beef Show by the Rockhampton State High School for Mr Ward.
The 23-month-old Black Simmental-Brangus cross steer weighed 650 kilogram liveweight and beat 37 steers for the title.
At the Central Queensland Carcase Classic Mr Ward exhibited two Black Simmental-Brangus cross steers in two classes in a total showing of 293 head and went home with a first and second place.
The first steer, a milk tooth by Bonnydale Bettis H204, was entered in the grassfed steer/heifer, 0-4 teeth, 300-420kg HSCW class (53 entries) and secured a second.
It had a carcase weight of 332kg with an EMA of 98cm2 and an MSA Index of 60.01.
The second steer a milk tooth by Bonnydale Tanker H216 was in a class for grassfed trade steer/heifer, 0-2 tooth, 180-300kg HSCW (51 entries).
It didn't win its class but it received the award for the highest meat yield carcase across all exhibits.
The steer weighed 230kg with an EMA of 87cm2 and an MSA index of 60.95
