TOUGH, sweaty, masculine shearers wearing bright pink singlets are not a common sight in the average shearing shed.
But if you stumbled across the Abbott family's Moodiarrup shed last Friday, that's exactly what you would have found.
Not only was the entire A-Team shearing consignment sporting the snazzy singlets, but also the many friends, family and supporters who turned out in the hope of raising money for breast cancer.
More than 70 people crammed into the shed at Stephen Abbott's property to watch 500 of his Capercup Dohne ewes being shorn in the name of charity, raising a huge total of $3932.50.
The idea and driving force behind the charity shearing day belonged to A-Team member Darryl Featherstone, whose wife Kerry was diagnosed on May 23, 2012 with breast cancer.
After speaking with Stephen and his partner Anne Wright about holding the event at Capercup and setting the wheels in motion, both Darryl and Kerry were overwhelmed by the positive response they received in the lead up and on the day.
Darryl said not only did they want to raise money for the McGrath Foundation, they also wanted to emphasise the importance of regular checks and providing women, particularly rural women, with the right kind of knowledge and support.
He had always been impressed by the work the McGrath Foundation undertook and was keen to contribute in some way.
"The two key things that impressed me about the McGrath Foundation was its ability to raise awareness and get specialist nurses on the ground, particularly in rural areas," Darryl said.
"The main message is to knowing how to check yourself regularly and properly and even involving your partner, so these things can be detected early.
"We are just overwhelmed with the love and support we have received today.
"A huge thanks to the generosity of Stephen Abbott and his lovely lady Anne for letting us hold the event at Capercup and everyone that helped throughout the day."
Not only did the Abbotts and volunteer shearers donate the proceeds of shearing 500 sheep, Stephen and Anne also put six sheepdog pups up for sale, one of which was purchased for $200.
In addition to Capercup, other contributors to the day included Top Gun Shearing Supplies, Coates Hire, Collie, Spearwood Wools, Andrew Saxon Services and Probak Belts.
Stephen said following the outstanding success of the day, they were looking at making it an annual event.
