BUYERS were out in numbers at the combined-agents cattle sale at Manjimup last week where a good selection of more than 300 cattle were presented.
Quality varied which was the determining factor on values achieved.
Being a fat and store cattle sale, processors, backgrounders, lotfeeders, live export and local graziers all competed on the appropriate cattle, with values for the better quality drafts selling strongly to be equal with other sales.
Beef steers topped at $1503 with lighter vealer types selling to 354c/kg.
Beef heifers also went well reaching $1375 and an equally creditable 328c/kg.
Weaner bulls attracted strong export inquiry to sell up to 344c/kg realising a high of $984.
The top cow made $1643 and 212c/kg while bulls reached $1816 and 210c/kg.
A good number of first-cross heifers attracted the heifer specialists to the sale, selling to $1480 while one line of cows and calves went for $1840.
Primaries kicked off proceedings with several pens of well-presented cattle from Stirling Brothers, Pemberton, with a Murray Grey-Hereford cross steer weighing 515kg selling to Johnson Meats for $1493 and 290c/kg.
Another three lighter steers averaging 311kg went to local graziers, Ray W Muir for $1072 at 344c/kg.
Two pens of heifers from this vendor then sold for $1288 and $1036 for 318 and 314c/kg when bought for RA Rogers.
The Hettner family had pens of steers, heifers and bulls. Their bulls attracted the best support to sell to $984 and 344c/kg.
The better cows with this agent were four Angus from DR Roche, Pemberton, with these going to Harvey Beef for $1362 and 200c/kg.
Landmark followed with almost half of the yarding.
Four quality Angus steers from G & K McKay weighed 491kg and sold to Harvey Beef Farms (HBF) for $1503 at 306c/kg to be the top steers with this agent.
A single Charolais heifer from Dr J Rosenthal, Yornup, weighed 625kg and sold to HBF for $1375 and 220c/kg.
Another black heifer from FJ Angel went to Johnson Meats when the 520kg female sold for $1248 and 240c/kg.
This vendor later sold two Murray Grey steers weighing 475kg at 312c/kg to cost HBF $1482.
The first export steer from S & V Danti cost Otway Livestock $1092 at 336c/kg.
Vealer steers saw a high of $972 paid by Falcinella Brothers for four weighing 282kg from Lubout and McCullough, with these selling for 344c/kg.
An Angus steer averaging 255kg from P & M Scherini sold for $811 and 318c/kg while three others from DP Scherini in the pen returned $800 at 318c/kg with all going to JL Piscioneri.
Later in the sale the Scherini family's combined again to sell heifers for $945 and $924 to Mr Piscioneri for 326c/kg.
The Daubney family, Northcliffe, offered several pens of first-cross heifers of various breeds.
The top of $1480 was paid for five Angus by Tellarup Brook Farm.
Dr Rosenthal then bid to $1200 for three Herefords before adding the next seven Angus at $880.
A pen of five Murray Grey cross cows and calves sold by P & R Rosenthal made $1840 when bought by account Firelight.
Elders completed the sale, starting with a Hereford heifer from Moltoni and Zamora, with Johnson Meats paying $1276 at 232c/kg for the 550kg heifer.
Hyde Park Grazing sold a Simental steer weighing 405kg for $1182 and 292c/kg to RA Rogers before selling young bulls to Livestock Shipping Services for $1438 and $1414, up to 285c/kg for the 580 and 496kg bulls.
The top cow for the day was a Hereford from Moltoni and Zamora weighing 790kg that made the top of 208c/kg and $1643 when bought by Harvey Beef.
