But in WA, the concept of using front and rear linkage and PTOs is now starting to be adopted.

Higher horsepower front-wheel assist (FWA) tractors have taken over the lower power rating end of the four-wheel drive (4WD) market and increased year-round use.

According to Landpower territory manager north James Moss, it makes a lot of sense, particularly when you have a tractor like the CLAAS Axion, with front linkage and PTO and it also broadens the uses for the tractor during the year.

The 930 model was put through its paces last week operating triple mowers to cut oaten hay on a York farm.

"Farmers are not only mowing, but using the front linkage to carry liquid tanks, tillage gear, crop sensors and fuel tanks," Mr Moss said. "So it can be used for a range of jobs year-round."

The AXION 900 series features an 8.7L, six-cylinder, 24-valve Fiat Power Train (FPT) Cursor 9 engine equipped with selective catalytic reduction technology and advanced electronic management and cooling systems.

This is teamed up with a split-power, continuously variable transmission whose four mechanical ranges deliver a range of ground speeds from 50 metres an hour to 50km/h.

"This unit is outstandingly efficient in delivering power to the wheels and PTO at all engine speeds," Mr Moss said.

"The CMATIC transmission provides three driving modes - automatic, drive stick or manual - all of which can be activated on-the-go."

The engine, front and rear linkages and PTOs are all fully integrated into the frame, whose long wheelbase (3.15m, 10.3ft) and a compact overall length of (5.56m, 18.3ft) achieves optimum weight distribution and traction.

"This robust design allows up to 6.5 tonnes to be mounted to the front linkage without the need for additional bracing, while the rear linkage has a maximum lift capacity of 11 tonnes," Mr Moss said.

"There's no need for front ballast in most situations, ensuring maximum manoeuvrability and saving fuel and unnecessary tyre wear."

CLAAS also has ensured the 900's design and huge capacity opens up a wide range of applications.

It can be equipped with dual wheels, front and rear and front (optional) and rear PTO with three different PTO speeds.

Six hydraulic valves are fitted at the rear and two at the front, which means it is a highly versatile work platform that is equally at home spraying, baling or mowing.

And then there's harvest and using it as a chase tractor.
