DESPITE less than optimum market conditions, the first farm auction in the Darkan region for the season, the 834 hectare Munyantine, sold under the hammer for $2.7 million earlier this month.
A good turnout of around 80 people, including farmers from adjoining districts of Williams, Wagin and Kojonup were on hand to see VNW Independent auctioneer Hugh Ness start the bidding for Munyantine at $1.9m, with the property drawing 32 bids before it sold under the hammer to adjoining neighbours, the Campbell family of Darkan.
Mr Ness said it was a very good result despite the less than ideal current market, with solid bidding for the quality Darkan farm showing there was still confidence in the market.
The price equates to $1310 an acre or $3237/ha.
"The price achieved was a very good result but Darkan is a fairly tightly-held area and we always expected a property like this to sell," Mr Ness said.
"It just goes to prove that good property will always find a good home."
Munyantine has a high percentage of grazeable land, with some cropping of oats, barley and canola.
The property has 22 paddocks and 18 dams, with soils mainly medium to heavy undulating loams.
Vendors Leigh and Vicki Kelly are well-known locals, who were looking to retire.
