FEDERAL Independent MP Bob Katter yesterday introduced legislation aimed to preventing the sale of Cubbie Station to foreign interests.

Mr Katter's Bill prohibits the sale of a controlling share of Cubbie to foreign persons, or if sold, for the share to be disposed of to somebody approved by the Treasurer.

He said the government was intent on selling out the Australian people, raising the similarities between the recent Ord irrigation land sale and that of Cubbie Station.

“They won’t give Australian farmers a single cent and yet will deliver to a foreign corporation a $600m subsidy," he said.

“Do they want us to be a nation of serfs working for foreign landlords?”

This fool is becoming very tedious and boring, and only someone equally tedious and boring could disagree.

I can remember when Bob Hawke & Paul Keating made the statement that no foreign concern would own more than 49% controlling interest in any Australian business. Not long after this statement, Bundaberg Sugar Co. was sold lock, stock and barrel to Tait & Lyle, a British company. Can someone explain how this happened, and how it is still happening? I have no issue with foreign investment. There should be recipricol agreements between countries entering into these contracts. There has to be benefit to both party's. Has anyone bought any property in Japan or China lately?

Foreign capital in the form of ownership of, and investment in agricultural land has been ongoing since the time of settlement. None of our current agricultural land would exist without it. I am not sure that Mr Katter would be so strident in his opposition where it the Americans or the English involved in this investment. The "Yellow Peril" of last century, have become the "Yellow Savious" of this one and it is time Bob either got on board or shut up. Anyway Bob don't you own a Toyota!! what Australian cars are good enough for you!!

So lets get this right. Cubbie failed financially. It went bust. It spent three years in Administration. No Australian wanted it. Along comes a bunny to buy 70% and the Kat in the Hat wants to stop the deal. And that will be good for who precisely? And not letting the facts get in the way of stupidity, the Ord deal is a lease, not a sale. This is a cunning plan: the Kat in the Hat wants land prices to fall so that he can create more voters, willing to come to his dog whistle...watch and see.
