MORE than 100 students, staff and industry representatives were hosted last week by the UWA Institute of Agriculture and Students of Natural and Agricultural Sciences for the first Women in Agriculture breakfast.

Participants at the sold out event celebrated the role of women in agriculture, witnessing presentations from Department of Agriculture and Food economist Lucy Anderton, UWA Institute of Agriculture deputy director Lyn Abbott and UWA postgraduate student Lynne Johnston who provided a snapshot of the state of industry and opportunities for women.
Co-organised by UWA students Brydie Creagh, Ongerup and Rebecca Kempin, Broomehill, it is hoped the student-driven idea will become an annual event.
"Women aren't always fully recognised in the agricultural industry," Ms Kempin said.
"But I think there is a bright future for women in agriculture and lots of opportunities."
Ms Kempin said the event gave students an opportunity to network with people from the industry.
"We hope to continue to increase the diversity of agriculture," she said.
"We want to get more females involved and get them the recognition they deserve."
