A LARGE crowd gathered for the almost 3000 Merino sheep being offered by Landmark on behalf of Ian and Neville Giles and family at their clearing sale south east of Pingelly last week.
It appeared that most of the crowd were there only to see what values might result over the five lines of ewes and four lines of last year's lambs, however there were some buyers among them to generally create some good competition on some of the select lines being offered.
All the joined ewes were January shorn and rams had been put in on December 28 and taken out early February with the four lines of ewe and wether weaners October shorn.
Landmark sale auctioneer Terry Norrish opened the offering on a line of 141 green tag, 1.5-year-olds, which had been running with both Merino and Suffolk rams and it didn't appear there was much interest in the overall offering when the first line was knocked down to a Beverley buyer at just $24.
The next line, 482 orange taggers which had been running with Suffolk rams got off to a low start at just $25 however a battle between just two bidders finally saw this line top the sale at $49.50, the buyer being Scott Packer, Packer & Sons, Yealering.
The line of 211 white tag ewes, joined to Merinos, also saw good competition and they finally went at $45 to Kalpara Grazing Co, Boddington.
The largest line on the day, 530 black taggers, also joined to Merino came back slightly in value finally going at just $30.50 to FC Tyson & Co, Kondinin.
The final line of the Giles family's joined ewes, 215 older blue taggers went at just $25.50, with these going to another buyer from Wandering.
It was then on to the offering of the purple tag, October shorn ewe and wether weaners which had been drafted for size.
First up were 440 ewe weaners which, after some good competition went at $32 to AW & BE Paterson, Collie.
Next offered was the top draft of wether weaners and the 378 head in this line went to WA Southern Farming, Bunbury, at $38.
The second run of 213 ewe weaners stayed locally when bought at $20.50 by Kelsey Jay Nominees, Popanyinning, the second draft of wether weaners also stayed local going to Tareena Downs, East Pingelly at $19.50.
Next offered was a line of ewes followed by three pens of Suffolk rams account outside vendors.
First up were 132 September shorn, San-Mateo blood unjoined 1.5yo green tag ewes being offered on behalf of Drillion Pty Ltd and these went at $36 to Scott Horton, Narembeen.
The three pens of 2012-drop Suffolk flock rams from Salmon Downs Pastoral Co saw the first pen of six head sell at $117.50 to a Williams buyer who went on to also buy the second line of nine head at $150 and the third line of six head at $100 went to another buyer from the Williams region.
