WIAA 100: Hazle Marland

HAZLE Marland was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her services to the beef industry, local government and the community in 2003.

While a member of the former Cattlemen’s Union of Australia she achieved the following:

  • First woman in Queensland to hold an executive position in agripolitics, serving as chairman and vice president of Cattlemen’s Union of Australia
  • She was a Queensland representative on the committee which drew up the Exceptional Circumstances Scheme
  • First woman appointed to the Cattle Council of Australia
  • Chaired the Beef Industry Development Advisory Council set up by the Queensland Government for six years
  • Sat on the inaugural committee which introduced the National Livestock Identfication System
  • Hazle says her main objective was to attempt to provide a sustainable and profitable industry to hand to the next generation.

    She also demonstrated that it was possible for a woman to be appointed to positions where they could influence government policy which impacted on the beef industry.
