WIAA 100: Mary Retallack

MARY Retallack is a third generation viticulturist with expertise at all levels of the Australian wine industry, which has been honed over nearly 20 years in a range of vineyard management, technical, consultancy, research, training and extension roles.

Along with Mary’s tertiary qualifications, she is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Diploma course, a Fellow of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (ARLP Course 15), a past participant of the Future Leaders – Succession for the Australian Wine Sector Program and past non-executive director of the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation.

Mary is currently managing director of Retallack Viticulture, which offers a broad range of viticultural consulting services throughout Australia and a director of Wine Communicators of Australia.

Mary is also a member of the South Australian Wine Industry Council, Adelaide University – Wine Alumni Steering Group, sits on the editorial panel for The Australian and New Zealand Grapegrower and Winemaker Journal, is a founding member of the Wine Grape Growers’ Australia – Decision Support Network and an advisory group member for the National Rural Women’s Coalition's Networking the Networks project.

Mary was instrumental in the development of the Wine Grape Growers’ Australia (WGGA) VineBiz Business Development program and financial ‘ready reckoner’ and is WGGA’s preferred provider of VineBiz training.

A leader in the wine industry, in 2012 Mary was named the RIRDC Rural Woman of the Year.
