The article concludes that there's only an either/choice. Either consume GM eggs/chickens or continue the mass slaughter of male chicks. There is a third option being left unexplored. There is no necessity to eat anything from a hen at all! Eggs like meat &dairy are NOT critical to human health. We can thrive on a plant based diet.So sad to put all this effort & lives into a system that is eventually doomed for unsustainable failure anyway.
There's a remarkable product that totally takes the chickens out of the egg/slaughter paradigm.Beyond Eggs:

The meat/dairy/egg industries spends hundreds of millions of dollars lying to the public about their product. But no amount of false propaganda can sanitize meat. The facts are absolutely clear: Eating meat is bad for human health, catastrophic for the environment, and a living nightmare for animals. There's never been more compelling reasons or a better time to opt for a plant based diet.

What a pitiful way to treat a fellow Earthling. Just a bunch of thugs and bullies terrorizing helpless creatures. Shameful!
