All this debate is a prime example of how much people...sorry sheeple, such as "urban Sam" and "Bluey" take for granted where their food comes from. Maybe they will have a different attitude when they can't feed their family once a day, let alone three square meals a day. Life must be tough for this type.
Farmer John, I feel what you are saying. But Bob Brown has always hated farmers and always will...especially livestock producers. He is one politician that I will never warm to. He's just another "Watermelon"....Green on the outside but RED on the inside.
Bloody Hell Bill...that’s a terribly sad attitude. So you think we should just ignore this issue because you think farmers are "stupid". Ignoring this issue will only promote large company ownership of farming lands and less family farming businesses. Now that would be "Stupid".
In the face of a looming global food crisis, why is the government helping farmers "leave the land"...I would think helping them become sustainable would be more important. Or is this exit grant just a renamed retirement plan.
"Three times the cost to produce due to the costly nature of this farming". What a JOKE! The high cost associated with organic pig farming is due to the high level of mortality...hardly a welfare friendly alternative.
"Meatless Monday"...this has a vegan message written all over it. Wrong very wrong.
Ted, very true. But I believe another major factor driving this contraction is the federal Labor government's abolition of "Work Choices".
Common Cents...my thoughts exactly. That was a fantastic comment. I nearly fell off my chair laughing. We need more replies like this.
Webster defines “Veganism” – as an old Indian proverb meaning Very Bad Hunter.
The Australian pig industry has already been though a significant readjustment period due grain prices and imports. Because of a drop in supply and imports becoming less competitive, I think there will be a large increase in pork prices towards the end of 2008. And it’s about time to as pig producers have lost substantial amounts of money during the past 12 months. Consumers have been buying pork too cheap for to long!
Removal of the single desk...About bloody time! This sounds very familiar to the deregulation of the dairy industry and the crap "pro quota" people went on about back then. It did not destroy the industry and it won't destroy the wheat industry. Especially when we are in the middle of a global grain shortage and grain farmers are receiving record prices.
What a fantastic way of raising much needed funds for a very worthy cause. I hope the world record attempt is a great success and all the best to the Coggan family
More "Pie In The Sky" anti wild dog control garbage. I absolutely disagree with Angus. Wild dogs do not discriminate...they will kill anything they can get their teeth around.
