Well farmer Bob, I have worked for the Dept as well as private enterprise, I have spent a lot of time arguing with businesses trying to get them to do the right thing by the farmers (family members are farmers} and could only achieve reasonable outcomes when I had the independence of a federal job behind me, I often wonder why I bothered when I read some of the garbage that I see printed here, oh and as to private enterprise doing the job cheaper; you get what you pay for. The grain industry was not regulated prior to the late 60's and internationally we were a basket case.
People forget how big a basket case the Australian grain exports were, due to no quality controls and no independent oversight, Farmers called for gov'nt regulations in the late 60s and since then we have achieved an impressive increase in the grain quality and received a premium price because of it. However with successive gov'nts withdrawing independent oversight and replacing it with industry employed "authorised officers" we are losing this premium price and reputation, as we found out in the 60s, you can only export so many insects and rubbish before you lose money and reputation.
After 30 plus years of debate, the outcome of which OVERWHELMINGLY supports that human activity is responsible for global warming, it is time for the sceptics to accept the facts as presented by the majority of the scientific community[as well as the majority of the worlds governments] and either get on board and be a part of the economic development into SUSTAINABLE energy or get out of the way. Australia is being dragged backward in this area and the long term damage to our economy is horrifying. Point to the sceptics...vaccination works, but you will find a few "experts" who disagree
