Out of the shadow
Well Joe and what have you done to protect the Liverpool Plains. You could have a field day with this: http://www.smh.com.au/environment /barnaby-joyce-failed-to-seek-det ails-on-giant-shenhua-coal-mine-i nquiry-hears-20150728-gimbbn.html
Even if this mine is approved, it will be unviable at today's prices. Chairman Liu's comments indicate very clearly the contempt with which the Chinese treat Australian government processes. Quite clearly they will not adhere to government regulations should this mine be approved. The previous Labor government granted this license via corrupt minister. The current government has failed to deliver on election promises of preserving strategic agricultural land. Meanwhile what Barnaby promises to deliver and what he actually delivers remains to be seen.
As usual the proponent overstates the benefits of the mine. Respected economists have given evidence at the PAC that these benefits were very clearly exaggerated. More alarmingly the loss to agriculture through impacts on water, production and property values reached over $1Billion dollars during the 30 year lifespan of the mine.
Great article and well done Jeremy. However all agricultural land should be protected from mining as Australia has so little of it - especially if the communities do not want it. Australia cannot afford the loss of productive viable agricultural areas and scarce water resources.
Yet another overseas company (Chinese govt) plundering our nat resources and raping good farming country.
