Agribuzz with David Leyonhjelm

You only have to look at some of the conditions of the caged variety to realize that it is a very confined, miserable and unnatural environment. I would rather feed my family eggs from safe areas where chickens can go out to exercise on natural pesticide free paddocks, in fresh air and sunshine, along with a healthy variety of food -not toxic GM grains. Healthy eggs can only come from healthy chickens so why wouldn't we want to provide a healthy environment where they can be encourage to go outdoors for daily exercise. Of course they don't always want to stay outdoors if it's too cold or hot

Agribusiness

Many Australians are demanding labelling that clearly states: country of origin, all ingredients, including GMOs and pesticides or other chemicals used in the growing or processing of food. Reducing regulation to facilitate Free Trade Agreements is contrary to what we need to ensure that our children's health and well-being is not being compromised by the consumption of contaminated and harmful food. Globally, the heavy reliance on pesticides, particularly since the introduction of herbicide tolerant GM crops has already led to higher Maximum Residue Levels of these poisons in our food.

The government is not listening to consumers who are increasingly demanding GM -free and pesticide -free produce for health reasons. Informed consumers do not intentionally shop for GM or contaminated produce but they do struggle to get enough GM-free and pesticide free produce, particularly at affordable prices. The repeal of the GM Crops Free Areas Act will increase the foreseeable risk of contamination of GM-free and organic farms and drive up prices for consumers who are wary of Roundup Ready or similar herbicide tolerant GM produce and reject increasing pesticide residues in their food.
