About 30 shooters from across north Queensland bared the 45 degree heat to compete in the first competition of the year.
Cloncurry Clay Target Club hosted shooters from Mount Isa, Normanton, Townsville, Condamine and McKinlay with plenty of action at the traps.
AA Grade’s most consistent shooter was Stephen Curley who scored 74/75 in the Point Score, 25/25 in the Double Barrel and 25/30 in the Double Rise.
George Muller took out the A Grade competition in the Double Barrel scoring 25/25 but Jim Molloy won the Point Score with 73/75.
B Grade saw Craig Grigo with 71/75 in the Point Score and 23/35 in the Double Barrel. Peter Whelan sealed top place for C Grade with 24/25 in the Double Barrel and 24/30 in the Double Rise.
Club president, Jim Molloy, said it was an enjoyable morning with the sport slowly growing each year.
“This sport is consistently growing in north Queensland and we are happy to have new members.
“We currently have about 65 members and we had three more sign up today,” he said.
Being the only established club in north west Queensland, Mr Molloy said the club was glad to see support from other clubs.
“Our closest club is Normanton and we are happy to see competitors travelling from so far to support our club.
“Mount Isa have shooters but unfortunately lost their grounds about 10 years ago, so we host a lot of Isa members at our monthly shoots.”
The next competition at Cloncurry Clay Target Club will be on March 12.
