ACCORDING to Geraldton zone grower Murray Brooks, checking perennial grasses last week, good subsoil moisture would be a big benefit this year.

"The early wheat has tillered well and it looks average to above average," Mr Brooks said.

"The plant nutrition looks OK and we're keeping an eye on nitrogen treatments, but overall with subsoil moisture the wheat looks OK.

"Our lupins were slow away and at this stage you'd have to say it will only be an average crop.

"But they can come home with a wet sail and I'm hopeful that will be the case this year.

"With canola, it's pretty variable.

"There are some sensational crops set up but others are struggling so we'd have to say we'll probably get an average yield this year."
