BUYERS will be spoilt for choice at this month’s Elders Boyanup store sale when a quality line-up of store cattle goes under the hammer.
In the sale on Friday, March 16, the Elders South West team will yard about 1400 head from producers in the area comprising beef steers and heifers, first-cross steers and heifers, dairy steers plus cow and calf units.
The yarding of beef cattle will be made up of 400 steers and 200 heifers and will feature some quality lines of weaners, which will be ideal for graziers or lotfeeders.
The Friesian steer offering will be made up of steers ranging from poddies through to heavyweight two-year-old lines.
Elders South West livestock manager Michael Carroll said some good lines of cattle would be coming into the sale.
“We will have a good line-up of beef steers and heifers, including some large single vendor drafts, plus a good run of Friesian steers,” he said.
“The line-up will feature some exceptional quality drafts, meaning buyers will be able to put some good lines together before the break of the season.”
The beef steer and heifer offering will kick the sale off and there will be some classy lines up for grabs.
The largest contributor to these pens will be Alcoa Farmlands, Pinjarra and Waroona, when it trucks in its first draft of calves from its 2017 winter calving.
The operation has nominated 233 weaners, which are 9 to 10-months-old (May/June/July drop).
The operation’s 2800-head breeding herd comprises of Angus females based on predominantly Koojan Hills and Strathtay bloodlines along with Murray Greys bred from Tullibardine and Melaleuca genetics.
Steers will make up the majority of the draft with 140 Angus and 42 Murray Greys set to be trucked in.
Elders Waroona representative Michael Longford said the line-up of steers would weigh between 320 to 380 kilograms and would be ideal for grass fatteners, lotfeeders or live export.
The heifer offering will comprise 20 Black Simmental-Angus cross heifers, 19 Murray Grey, nine Charolais-Murray Grey and three Red Angus.
The line-up will be pregnancy tested empty and fit to breed, making them ideal for producers looking for future breeders.
“They are good feminine heifers which come from a highly fertile breeding herd,” Mr Longford said.
The Black Simmental cross draft is sired by a Bonnydale Black Simmental bull and out of Angus cows.
The calves were all yard weaned for seven days in January and February and have since been running on irrigated pastures and supplemented with hay and silage.
They have been vaccinated twice with 7in1, treated with Pilligard and Multimin plus receiving a drench treatment at weaning.
Lindberg Farms, Kudardup, will also be among the bigger vendors when it offers its annual draft of 39 Murray Grey weaners (26 steers and 13 heifers).
The line of 8-10mo calves are bred from Bundaleer and Monterey Murray Grey bloodlines and have been running on good summer pasture and been supplementary fed hay.
Richard Farris, Farris Family Trust, Chapman Hill, will also feature in the beef line-up with a quality draft of 21 Angus steers.
The 10-12mo steers are from the operation’s breeding herd of 50-60 cows and are based mainly on Diamond Tree and Little Meadows Angus bloodlines.
The calves will weigh from 350-380kg and they have had all the normal vaccinations.
Other larger beef lines will come from Yornup Holdings, Yornup, with 20 Simmental cross (10 steers and 10 heifers) aged 10-12mo; RG McKnight, Capel, 17 Angus and Murray Grey steers (12-14mo) and Venn Pastoral, Pinjarra, 17 Angus (five steers and 12 heifers) aged 10-12mo.
About 650 dairy steers and 100 first-cross steers of all ages and weights will also be offered.
One of the biggest vendors in the Friesian steers will be Sue Furfaro, Yarloop, who will present 45 black and white steers aged 14-16mo.
Elders Harvey/Brunswick representative Alex Roberts said the steers had been purchased in as poddies and had grown out into a nice line of steers.
Also trucking in numbers will be J & R Italiano Family Trust, Benger.
The Benger operation will present 26 steers (14-16mo) and four steers (20-22mo).
Mr Roberts said the line-up from the Italiano family, which were purchased in, would present extremely well.
“They are a nice, well-grown, even line,” he said.
Other larger lines in the same age bracket will come from Alf and Rose Russo Family Trust, Busselton, which will offer 30 steers (18-20mo) and S & T Cross, Karridale, with 35 steers (14-16mo).
In the poddie pens
H Russell will offer the largest draft when they truck in their annual draft.
The Russells will offer 70 owner-bred, 4-6mo Friesian steers which have had all the health treatments including a drench, B12 and 7in1.
Also trucking in numbers will be Peninsula Downs, Karridale, which has nominated 40 Friesian steers and 20 Friesian cross steers all aged 4-6mo.
Negus Enterprises, Tutunup, will truck in its monthly draft, this time consisting of 40 Friesian steers aged 4-6mo which have been dehorned and had all the health treatments.
In the first-cross steer offering, HY Armstrong, Burekup, will contribute the largest numbers with a draft of 30 Angus-Friesian steers
(4-6mo).
The operation will also offer 30 Friesian steers of the same age.
Harvey operation Kaleden Farms will also offer young first-cross steers, when it trucks in 11 Angus-Friesians and 11 Hereford-Friesians.
The 6-8mo steers are all owner-bred and bucket-reared.
Mr Roberts said they were a top line of first-cross poddies just waiting to go out into the paddock and grow.
Kaleden Farms will also offer 23 Friesian steers aged 6-8 months from its dairy.
In the older first-cross lines, producers will not want to miss the 15 Angus-Friesians from CA Panetta, Harvey.
Mr Roberts said the 14-16mo steers from the Panetta family were purchased in as calves and grown out on irrigation.
“They are a super-quiet, well-grown line of first-cross steers,” Mr Roberts said.
Producers looking for first-cross heifers will have options with Ryelands Dairy, Boyanup, offering a top draft of Angus-Friesian heifers.
The Boyanup dairy, which milks 200 Friesian cows, has nominated three Angus-Friesians (14-16mo), 21 Angus-Friesians (6-12mo) and three Murray Grey-Friesians (4-6mo).
The owner-bred, bucket-reared heifers have had their 7in1 vaccinations (twice) and a drench last winter.
