ELDERS penned 1666 cattle at their monthly Boyanup store cattle sale last week, well above the advertised number of 1400.
Quality was excellent over most of the yarding, with values just holding similar to recent markets.
Appraisal beef and dairy steers again were keenly sought after by buyers with these holding value consistently as size and weight decreased.
Friesian poddies held recent higher returns with competition on all pens.
The liveweight beef and dairy cattle saw some outstanding cattle with lotfeeders and graziers competing on these.
Appraisal beef steers topped at $940 while dairy steers reached $765.
The $420 top for dairy poddies was in line with the past couple of sales.
Liveweight beef steers made up to $1366 and 328c/kg while their heifer counterparts topped at $1147 and 290c/kg.
An excellent run of heavy Friesian steers saw a high of $1332 and 226c/kg.
Recent sales have seen higher cents per kilogram but those values were paid for much lighter weight cattle.
First cross heifers sold to $650 while mated cows of mixed age topped at $1200.
Only a couple of cows and calves were offered with these making to $1160.
A pen of nine steers weighing 491kg from KW & NG Prowse, Harvey, topped the beef steers at $1366 when bought by Greg Jones for 278c/kg.
Very close to this price were 12 Angus weighing 498kg from DJ & L Klein, Capel, bought by Rob Gibbings, Elders Capel, at 270c/kg and $1344.
A few pens later, Mal Barrett, Elders Boyanup, bid to 276c/kg and $1347 for 11 Murray Grey steers weighing 488kg from the Klein family.
Daniel Delaney, Delaney Livestock Sevices, Busselton, was dominant early in the beef cattle, buying several pens from IG & S Rutherford for up to $1197 and 322c/kg.
Nine Hereford steers sold by WJ & CJ Lord, Busselton, were snapped up by Greg Jones at $1202 to be among the better returns.
The top of 328c/kg was paid by Ralph Mosca, Landmark Harvey, for 11 grey steers sold by Ransome Family Trust, with the 270kg cattle costing $887.
A dominant buyer for a feedlot client, Chris Waddingham, Landmark Capel, paid around 308c/kg for numerous pens.
Later Mr Waddingham added several pens of the beef heifers from IG & S Rutherford costing up to $986 and 278c/kg, before taking the sale top of 290c/kg paid for 10 Angus cross heifers from Matt Cook Transport, costing $897.
The top gross price went to two Hereford heifers from WJ & CJ Lord when Greg Jones paid $1147 for the 462kg females.
The top liveweight Friesian steers were a pen of 11 sold account E & P Cronin that were bought for Kookabrook Grazing at $1332 and 222c/kg.
This buyer also paid $1268 for a pen of Dudinallup steers weighing 598kg that cost 212c/kg.
Lou Tuia, Donnybrook, picked out the lighter steers, putting together a number of pens, paying to a top of $1049 for 10 weighing 514kg from Tania Femia.
The top of 226c/kg was paid by VA Edwards, Metricup, for 11 steers of 493kg that returned $1116 for D & BC Della Sale.
The appraisal beef steers started strongly with two buyers battling it out.
Terry Tarbotton, Elders Nannup, was the victor buying the first pen from Baypoint Holdings at $940 for VA Edwards and the next two pens for Masham Nominees at $910 and $900, with these sold by J & J Drennen and CA Panetta, Harvey, respectively.
Mal Barrett bought a pen of 15 Angus cross from PG & MC Italiano for $750 while VA Edwards added 14 from LJ Brennen at $740.
Alex Roberts, Elders Brunswick, paid $735 for six Murray Grey steers from Uduc Brook Farms, to be one of the better returns.
John Gallop paid the top of $765 for a pen of the appraisal dairy steers with these sold by S Sargent, Harvey.
He later added 11 sold by TC Lumsden for his client at $740.

The best of the Friesian poddies was a pen of 16 sold by Negus Enterprises, Busselton, when Alec Williams, Elders Margaret River, bid to $420, then adding the next pen of 17 at $370.
Other better poddie returns included nine sold by Uduc Brook for $380 when bought by Alex Roberts, as well as the same paid by Adam Becker for a single steer from B & CG Hester.
A line of 10 first cross heifers from D & A Campbell topped the section at $650 when bought by DO & LD Martin.
The dispersal of the TR & AE Larter cow herd was tough going for the auctioneer, with the first to seventh calving females forward in calf and in sound condition, but could only manage a top of $1200, paid by Cameron Harris, Elders Manjimup.
A single cow and calf from Bangadang made $1160, bought by Mal Barrett for $1160.
