IF you are chasing weaned calves with top breeding and plenty of quality, then the Landmark Boyanup weaner sale next Wednesday, November 28, will be the place to be.
The sale will be Landmark’s first stand-alone weaner sale for the season at Boyanup and buyers won’t be disappointed with the yarding on offer.
The Landmark South West team is expecting to yard close to 1600 calves, which will feature a variety of breeds including Angus, Murray Grey, Red Angus, Simmental, Gelbvieh, Poll Hereford and Charolais and all will be vendors’ first drafts of calves for their 2018 drop.
Landmark South West livestock manager Matt Watts said the sale would feature an outstanding line-up of weaners.
“The majority of the yarding will consist of well-bred Angus and Murray Grey weaners but there will also be a good percentage of Euro-cross calves based on Charolais, Gelbvieh and Simmental breeding,” Mr Watts said
“Being all first draft weaners and coming off good spring pasture, a fair percentage of the yarding will weigh from 320 to 360 kilograms and will be ideal for the lotfeeding fraternity.
“There will also be a quality run of calves weighing less than 320kg on offer which will suit the grazier and restocker markets.”
Not only will the sale provide a chance for buyers to secure quality weaners, it will also provide them with an opportunity to purchase calves that have been fully weaned, meaning the work is already done for them.
Like past years, all calves on offer will be weaned for a minimum of 10 days and Landmark recommends clients wean their calves in accordance with Meat and Livestock Australia guidelines.
One of the biggest offerings in the sale will come from regular weaner vendors at this time of the year, the Kielman family, Lilyvale Grazing, Pinjarra.
The Kielmans will offer their annual draft, which will consist of 200 Angus calves (140 steers and 60 heifers) from their 360-head breeding herd based on mainly New Generation and Cherylton genetics.
The growthy, well-muscled calves were dropped in March/April and are sired by Cherylton, Mordallup and New Generation bulls.
Landmark Capel agent Chris Waddingham said the Lilyvale calves were outstanding and have been consistent performers in both grain and grassfed operations in the past.
“They are good early calves, which will be ideal for either lotfeeders or graziers,” Mr Waddingham said.
The calves were yard weaned last week and have been treated with Bovilis MH, have had their 5in1 (steers) and 7in1 (heifers) booster at weaning and prior to sale will receive a backline drench.
Also at weaning they received Beachport Liquid Mineral in their water.
Donnybrook-based operation Kinjarling Downs will also be one of the sale’s major vendors with an offering of 135 Angus calves (80 steers and 55 heifers) from its breeding herd of 180-200 head.
The April/May drop calves are sired by Black Market bulls and out of quality Angus cows, some of which were purchased at the Landmark Specially Selected Breeders Sale at Boyanup and the Landmark Great Southern Blue Ribbon Breeders Sale in past years.
Come sale day the Kinjarling Downs calves will have been weaned for close to 30 days.
The steer offering will range from 250-320kg and the heifers will be between 230-260kg.
Pinjarra operation South West Pastoral will offer its first draft of calves for the year – 60 Angus steers.
The February/March drop calves are based on Mordallup and Diamond Tree/Gandy Angus bloodlines and come sale day these quality black calves will have been weaned for three weeks following a yard-weaning program.
The operation’s calves have been highly sought after in the past and this year’s calves are up to their usual standard and won’t disappoint.
The line will weigh 360-410kg.
They are outstanding calves which will perform well both in feedlots and grass fattening operations.
The South West Pastoral calves have received a 7in1 and B12 and Selenium treatments at both marking and weaning along with an Eprinex drench at weaning.
Another classy line of Angus calves will come from Capel producers Doug and Barbara Payne, Burradale, who regularly sell their calves at this time of the year.
The Paynes will offer 50 beautifully shaped, nice thick, black calves (35 steers and 15 heifers) from their breeding herd of 70 head.
The March/April drop calves, which show an excellent temperament, are based on predominantly New Generation Angus bloodlines.
The steers are expected to weigh 320-340kg and the heifers will weigh from 310-330kg.
The line has been weaned since the second week in October and all the calves have been treated with Multimin at regular intervals during the winter and at weaning.
Also at weaning they were treated with Cydectin.
Elgin producers TC & KS Cox will also be among the bigger vendors of Angus weaners in the sale when they truck in 100 calves (50 steers and 50 heifers).
The calves are 7-8-months-old and based on Cherylton bloodlines.
The steers are expected to range from 280-330kg in weight, while the heifers will range from 260-310kg.
Another big vendor of Angus calves will be SH Fry & Sons, Benger, with 140 mixed sex Angus weaners.
The line, which is based on Little Meadows bloodlines, will be the operation’s annual draft and will be well settled come sale day after being weaned in early November.
Other good lines of Angus calves on offer will be trucked in by Donnybrook operations JA & TP Patane and Bickley Grazing as well as M Kirkham, Coolup.
The Patanes have nominated 40 calves (25 steers and 15 heifers) sired by Cherylton and Blackrock bulls.
Mr Waddingham said the Patane steers would have a weight of 300-340kg and the heifers 280-320kg.
Bickley Grazing’s offering will consist of 40 Angus heifers which will weigh about 260-280kg, while the Kirkham’s line will be made up of 55 mixed sex calves weighing 300-410kg.
For buyers looking for calves which aren’t black, then a line of 100 Murray Greys (50 steers and 50 heifers) from Trafalgar, Brunswick, could be the answer.
The grey calves will range from 250-320kg and are the operation’s first draft for the season.
Also in the pens of grey calves will be 60 Murray Grey heifers from Hampton Farm, Brookhampton.
The 7-8mo heifers are based on the operation’s own Hampton Farm stud bloodlines.
Another vendor with a sizeable line of Murray Grey calves will be Highland Valley Homestead, Burekup.
The operation has nominated 18 steers and 20 heifers which are 7-8mo and based on Monterey and Melaleuca bloodlines.

Mr Waddingham said the line would average about 310-320kg.
Brunswick operation GD & DA Liddiard will also be among the vendors of British breed calves with its draft of 53 Poll Hereford mixed sex weaners, which will be the operation’s first draft for the year.
But if it’s calves with a Euro influence buyers want, then a big line of 100 Chargrey mixed sex calves from Shalimar Holdings, Pinjarra, could fit the bill.
The calves are sired by Charolais bulls and out of Murray Grey cows.
The operation will also offer 60 mixed sex Angus calves and both lines will be the operation’s first drafts for the year.
The line is expected to weigh from 280-360kg.
On the Simmental front Oakridge Lodge, Pinjarra, has nominated 100 Simmental cross calves (50 steers and 50 heifers) aged 8-10mo.
